How to make Soft Pretzels

Everyone loves soft pretzels! They're easy to make at home with just a bit of shaping practice.

Ingredients

Flour Sugar Yeast Salt Butter Milk

Water Baking soda Egg Coarse salt

Combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt in a bowl.

Step 1

Add softened butter and warm milk.

Step 2

Mix together to form a sticky dough.

Step 3

Place on a floured surface and knead until smooth, adding more flour as needed.

Step 4

Shape into a ball and let rise in a greased bowl until doubled.

Step 5

Preheat oven. Fill a large pot with water and add baking soda. Bring to a boil.

Step 6

Gently deflate risen dough and divide into 8 equal pieces.

Step 7

Roll each piece of dough into a long rope.

Step 8

Shape into a U and twist ends together.

Step 9

Fold bottom of the U under and press ends onto curve.

Step 10

Lower pretzels into water and boil 30 seconds on each side.

Step 11

Let pretzels drain briefly on a wire rack set over paper towels.

Step 12

Transfer to baking sheet. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with salt.

Step 13

Bake for about 15 minutes, until dark and crusty.
